Media Democracy Fair

A Media Democracy Fair (sometimes called an "Independent Media Fair") provides an opportunity for independent media outlets, public service media outlets, advocacy groups, and media democracy activists to exchange information and display their work to the public. Media Democracy Fairs often are most effective in providing exposure and connections for local organizations although regional, national, and super-national organizations often participate as well.

Media Democracy Fairs are a central element of Media Democracy Day. However, Media Democracy Fairs are not exclusively tied to MDD. Many conferences, social forums, and other gatherings include Media Democracy Fairs as well.

How to Organize a Media Democracy Fair

  • Find a space where you can set up tables-community center, Library, Cinema, University, High School, Public Park etc...
  • Contact local groups working on media issues and invite them to set up tables.
  • Set a date, make promotional materials (flyers, posters, email notices)-promote as much as possible
  • Have a key coordinator or group of coordinators handle location logistics (make sure tables set up, see if participants need additional space or power source etc...)
  • Enjoy the media revolution!

One method of making sure you have a good showing from the public is organizing your fair to coincide with a social forum, conference, public speaker, or community event. Media Democracy Day Fairs often coincide with other Media Democracy Day events like work shops, panels, and public speakers.
